Building a Future with Farmers: Challenges faced by young American farmers and a national strategy to help them succeed

A new survey by The National Young Farmer's Coalition of 1,000 farmers from across the United States reveals that access to capital, access to land, and health insurance are the largest challenges faced by young and beginning farmers. Farmers rated farm apprenticeships, local partnerships and Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) as the most valuable programs to help them succeed. USDA Agriculture Marketing Service (AMS)

AMS provides many resources related to food access, including farmer markets and local foods, agriculture community supported agriculture, supply chains and marketing. The new AMS Food Desert webpage from the Departments of Agriculture, Treasury, and Health and Human Services, regarding how food deserts are identified, grant opportunities, success stories, FAQs and a summary of the USDA’s initiative, and food desert census track data. Resources for grants are listed on the site and include opportunities in 19 programs within the Departments of Health and Human Services, Treasury and Agriculture.

WHY Hunger 

The WHY Hunger resource page includes reports on hunger, advocacy tools, federal nutrition policy tools, and farm to school program models. Their resource directory is a searchable database of food pantries, health care services, economic development resources and anti poverty organizations. Their Food Security Learning Center page includes information on a wide variety of food access topics such as farm to school, land use planning, local and regional food systems, and climate change.

Center for Disease Control (CDC)

The CDC has many resource pages related to food access centered on Obesity, Transportation and Food Access – which includes resources on food-related transportation in low income communities, and Healthy Food Environments -  and includes a variety of food access-related resources on community gardens, farmers markets, food policy councils and farmland protection. Resource pages provide fact sheets on various topics, and also include reports and white papers.
